Breaking News:
Arcane Arsonist Afoot?

October 5, 1024 ·

Shortly before lauds this morning, a minor fire broke out in Hearthgate’s merchant quarter. According to Sergeant Willoin of the guard, two bodies – believed to be human – were burned in an “offensive and deliberate way” in the middle of Peetly Row, outside the Sleepy Sorcerer tavern. The fire started as quickly as it ended, with eyewitness testimony describing a bright flash of orange that filled the entire street for but a moment, before subsiding. Although the fire lasted for but a second, numerous items in the area were set ablaze by the initial burst – including the clothing of two victims. Damage to surrounding buildings seems to be minimal, with paint melting off two merchants shingles. The guard notes that a small figure in robes was seen lurking in an alley shortly before the fire, but neither of the victims were clothed in robes. The guard is investigating this as arcane arson.

Diviners believe this may be related to the destruction of the Hobbling Ogre inn two nights ago. That fire saw an entire building instantly engulfed in flames, which banished fourteen souls from this mortal coil. The intense heat from that inferno burned down multiple neighboring buildings and left at least six families homeless. Two witnesses from that night describe an attractive but waifish elfin man throwing a small flame into the common room seconds before the entire structure burst into flames. This unknown elf is currently being sought for questioning.

The Hobbling Ogre was the frequent watering hole of Leif the Naysayer, who was seemingly connected with the rise of the cult of Fillithannavi, which has recently infected the city. This mysterious cult to the dark elfin god of vermin and decay was all but unknown to residents here a fortnight ago. However, according to reports from local parishes, there are already dozens of converts, despite the numerous screeds shouted and written against the goddess by Leif the Naysayer. The Hobbling Ogre was also a frequent resting area for the so-called “adventuring parties” that have begun to infest the city in ever greater numbers since the rediscovery of the entrance to the ancient dwarfin road running under the Perculas Mountains. This recent fire will no doubt increase pressure on the council to ban or license these foreign mercenary troops.

Problems with Pilgrims

June 8, 1024 ·

For the past tenday our town has been overrun by so-called religiously inspired pilgrims, traveling here for the vernal festival of Talath. Every year we must pander to bibulous men and profligate women wandering our streets, befouling our greens, and crowding our inns and hospitals – all so they can take place in the disgraceful drunken orgiastic Vernal Bacchanalia. And each year more arrive! Since the peace of 1016, the amount of travelers here for pilgrimage increases every year. And… Read more.

Alanna – the First Adventure

June 4, 1024 ·

Alanna – The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce is the first book in a series of novels depicting the trials of a teenage human female struggling to attain knighthood. It is based on the somewhat amusing notion that humans cannot easily differentiate the genders of children, as the title character pretends to be male in order to achieve knighthood. Although warrior-women are not unheard of in regressive human societies (indeed, they have a term specifically for them: amazons), the path… Read more.

The Vinth – a forgotten place

June 2, 1024 ·

Most people don’t stop by here anymore. A relic, a warning, an echo of previous lives and passing fancies, Vinth has served as Harbling’s once popular elfin knickknacks shoppe for over three centuries. When contemporary citizens purchase cheap furnishings produced by orcish slaves and curios reliably imported from around the continent by halfling merchants, the fashion of bedecking a Ruglin Street flat in finely crafted elfin artefacts may seem curiously expensive. But for those seeking the genuine, elfin craftsmanship or… Read more.

Glorguumax

June 2, 1024 ·

It is with great sorrow that we announce Glorguumax, inter-dimensional plasmic eyeball mass and esteemed editor-in-chief of this newspaper, has been vanquished by adventurers; he was 15,693 Ashrafan years old. Formed out of celestial morass and a titan’s bile, Glorguumax spent his formative years percolating consciousness in the swamplands of Kordin Muul. An early encounter ingesting a traveling scholar and his small library led to a millennia-spanning interest in the written word. “No matter how much more I ingested,” he… Read more.

Lonwell – In Progress

June 1, 1024 ·

Two days south of Heathgate, sits the hamlet of Lonwell. The gateway to the downlands, Lonwell is the last hamlet north of Bedthorpe Downs whose livelihood does not depend on mining, processing, or sale of the chalk. As such it is a hamlet both typical and atypical. The whole of the manor’s land here is dedicated to agriculture, nary a cow nor sheep grazes near this small manor. The grain and produce here does not head to local market towns,… Read more.

Corvee Clemency

May 30, 1024 ·

The Lord’s Reeve of Underwell Glen has announced a temporary reprieve from corvée for the coming month. Although Ardda the reeve acknowledges that plough time normally demands heavy workloads from Underwell Glen’s serfs, he says Lord Childiver feels deeply for the ‘sodden wretches of Culriver’ following the devastation from the recent flooding of Culriver. Fourteen people are missing from communities along the Culriver since it overran its banks seventeen days ago. Although no houses in Underwell Glen were swept away,… Read more.
